The main difference is that the distributors sell those products and use them for their personal need. Hence, they act as both distributor and customers.

A distinguishing feature of network marketing is that in it the income of the distributors depends on the volume of the products they sell and the number of new distributors they bring. However, the percentage and rules vary from one network marketing company to another. The income scheme of the MLM companies has proved to be popular in various countries of the world.

However, people need to be careful when opting for the MLM schemes. There are many such companies and with time many traditional businesses are joining the MLM bandwagon. Certain basic parameters should be considered by people before they join any MLM company.

The services and products offered by a MLM company should not be expensive. There are many companies who offer similar products at reasonable rates. So people will not feel interested to buy overpriced products. The demand of those products needs to be high. The distributors selling those products need to get adequate percentage or commission for selling.

However, people willing to join MLM businesses should be patient. It is not meant for making one rich overnight. It is not ideal for people who lack an active nature. It helps people in earning extra money by spending some amount of time after the business. People doing regular jobs can also opt for MLM. The MLM opportunities can also be suitable for the active natured retired people who want to earn even in their ripe years.

There are some people who compare MLMs with scam and pyramid schemes where the people at the top gain the maximum benefits while those at the bottom get paid peanuts for their hard labor. But this is a half baked view of the sector. Even in the traditional businesses only the CEOs and directors get hefty pay slips. With hard work, commitment and consistency one can succeed in MLM business.
